Warning Re about Fraudulent Phone Calls Purporting To Be from Amazon
We would like to warn residents about fraudulent phone calls purporting to be from Amazon. Different methods are being used in recent weeks.
What is the scam?
Residents have reported being contacted on the phone to inform them that their Amazon Prime accounts have been renewed.
Some of these calls have been made using a recorded “robovoice” whereas some have been made by a human.
The victims have been told to press 1 if they didn’t request their account to be renewed and they will receive a refund.
There have been other incidents where a fraudster purporting to be Amazon has called a resident on their land line, claiming that there has been fraudulent activity on their account and requesting they log in to their Amazon account via a website or a different app which they are required to download to their phone or by pressing 1.
In both instances of these calls, the scam works by the fraudster obtaining personal and financial details of the victim.
What do the police say?
If you receive a phone call claiming to be from Amazon, offering you a refund or asking you to log on to your account, do not proceed with this. Hang up the call. You are not obliged to speak to them or anyone. Do not share any information with any of these types of callers.
Please report any calls or similar calls to Action Fraud https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/reporting-fraud-and-cyber-crime
